Can I lighten up Jet Black hair?

Okay, I know...jet black IS jet black, which is the color I dyed my hair 2 weeks ago....I HATE IT!

Is there a way to lighten up jet black? The girl at the beauty supply says "NO!"...

You can lighten it... I did it a couple years ago... it took forever. At pretty much any store that sells hair dye, they have a lightener... just a warning for you though... it'll probably turn your hair orange. ALSO! Ask a licensed cosmetologist that specializes in hair color whether or not you can use the lightener on your hair and be sure to take the box of hair color you used with you (if its a metallic dye it could fry your hair). You might want to wait a couple more weeks before you use the lightener just in case. Once you use the chemical lightener, your hair will probably end up looking like mine did, a brassy orange... I still had big spots of black dye that didn't come out.. so I ended up using the lightener twice to get more of it out. After I lightened it, I deep conditioned my hair with mayonnaise almost daily, and make sure you don't put shampoo on the ends of your hair... After lightening the hair I dyed my hair back to its natural shade... It worked out just fine for me, I had no signs of damage to my hair.. Also, a friend of mine dyed her hair to a dark shade of brown and wanted it lighter... she used something called a peroxide cap.. the link for how to do this will be shown as a source. I Hope everything works out for you and that this information was useful to you!!

Well, you can, but it's a SLOW process. I'm in the process myself. I would wait at least 2 more weeks before I did anything with my hair. You need to have it professionally done, and yes, they can do it. Most don't like to though, because you can turn your hair orange.

It would have to be bleached to an orange color - any lighter may cause your hair to break. Than you would have to have a semi-permanent ash brown colored over top of the orange. It will fade %26amp; you'll have to continue to get the semi-permanent color on it for awhile. You can lighten it, but only to a medium-dark brown. And your hair will be pretty dried out. You'll have to buy salon hair products %26amp; take good care of your hair.

I'd get some Colorfix at Sally's. It should come right out. Your hair will be an orangey shade, which is correct. You can then color over it with something less dark.
