You can try, but there is no guarantee that your results will be what you are expecting. Going to a salon for a professional coloring is always your best bet.

But, if you are dead set on doing an at-home dye job, Loreal Excellence was the best at-home I tried. It had the best conditioning, and closest coloring results.

No. You will have to lift it because the color you want is lighter then what u have right now. Your best bet is to go to a salon because it can be a scary thing to do at home and u might not like the end results.

I don't have black hair, but when I tried dying my medium brown hair to an auburn or reddish brown myself, it turned to more like a maroon color. It's really hard to do that type of thing at home and get the color you want...just a warning!

hello!! I am a hairdresser and chuckled reading your answers. Ok first off....semi permanant or temporary will do nothing. In order for your hair to be lighter your haircolor product will have to have peroxide in it..semi ,demi or stains wont do a thing. If your hair is naturally Jet Black you can acheive a rich deep deep red brown. And yes at home. BUT, for the most part the colors in stores arent fomulated for that much work. You will use it and get great results at the roots near ur scalp..then the ends will be blah and much darker than the rest. Best bet? contact a colorist. In the long run it will be less expensive . If you must use over the counter products ...use Feria..they have great reds ..use a level 4. ....thats a dark leven and then chose the highlight of red u want in it (auburn, mahagony, plum) all different accents u can choose from. Then when applying it apply to ends and mid lenths first..lastly apply to roots. You may want to buy 2 boxes. Store products generally dont contain the right amount . protect ur skin around ur forhead neck and ears with cream because the darker the color the more it will stain the U know what ouuta ur skin. Thirdly..expect to stain some towels in the days to follow...the darks red wash out quickly when done at home. Good luck!!Ps..If you hair is black because of haircolor you have done previously....dont try it.black is next to impossible to get out. color will do ur new growth at the roots and not do a thing to the rest.
