Its too much of a color switch.

Your hair is/was too dark to be lightened just with hair dye.

You might want to consider Bleaching your hair then dying thats the only way (that i know of) to get your exact color.

Get the same hair colour and dye it but don't put it on your roots

Honestly, I wouldn't do it. When you dye your hair and it turns out the exact opposite of what you expect, go to the hair salon because it can end up going totally wrong.

Don't dye it!

Unfortunately black hair is difficult to colour well.

I'd ask you're hairdresser for advice.

your first mistake was doing it yourself from a box of color off the shelf at a retail store. The best color is professional color that you mix with a developer and can get at a place called Sally's. Match your "natural" color w/ that of hair samples. Then find out where you want your hair to be. Count the number of "levels" between those two. If it's up 2 levels, then use 20 volume, if it's 3 levels use 30 volume, 1 level use 10 volume.

Your hair is too dark to do this on your own. Many people have to bleach their hair first, before dying it the color they want. It would be better to go to a professional. Good luck!

Okay. Always remember one thing about hair color. Going from lighter to darker, you can do it at home with minimal screwup potential. (nothing bad about you, but haircolor is a science of chemicals which could go very wrong when someone isn't schooled in what they're doing, and i'm guessing you're not a hairdresser.) HOWEVER!!!! when going from dark hair to lighter hair, even if it is just one or two shades, ALWAYS USE A PROFESSIONAL. For one thing, they have ton's of products on hand, and for another thing, they know what they are doing! Here is what went wrong with your hair. I am guessing, from what you said, that you dyed it the 'almost black' color that it is now, with permanant color. From off the counter. Then it grew out some, even an inch or so. Then, when you put the lighter color on, it only affected your roots. This is because color (or dye) doesn't lift (or lighten) color. The only thing that will lighten your almost black hair is bleach or highlift color, which should ALWAYS be left to a professional. Now. If you are not planning to go to a stylist to have this fixed, I'll tell you what you should do. Don't use the color glaze. Go back to the store and get a permanent color that best matches whatever color your ends are, or possibly one shade darker, because your roots are naturally darker than the rest of your hair. Most of the boxes have a letter and a number on them. 1 is black and 9 or 10 are blond, so i'm guessing that you're looking for maybe between 2 and 4 or 5. The letter you want is an N, not G, W, A. Make absolutely sure that you are getting a natural or neutral tone. Don't get gold, warm, or ash. This will just make things worse. Then, come home, and put your hair up in a clip, leaving about an inch or so out. Apply this color (a creamy color is better than a liquid) to your gold areas only. Which would just be your roots, or an inch or so out. Let your hair out of the clip in sections and repeat this till you get all the color applied around your face. Let the color sit for 10-15 minutes after you use the last of the color. Then wet a rag and rub off some of the color on top of your head and make sure it's not gold. If it's not gold, shampoo the color out. If it is, leave it on for 5 more minutes, and check it again till it looks right, then shampoo it out. Condition it really good, because it has just been through a lot. Then just remember, never lighten your own hair. If you want to darken your hair, but you don't want it dark forever, just use a semi-permanent color. Once you put black on your hair you can almost NEVER get it out. And color-correction (like, lightening black hairdye) at a hair salon can be VERY expensive. So good luck with that. :)

to dye dark hair lighter is something only a professional should so. sorry to say so, honey.

but first the hair has to be bleached, then treated with conditioner or mask, and then the colour is brought up. you can't do that at home. go to the hairdresser!

i have to assume that the black you have on your hair is coloured black and not natural black and the "root area" that turned out as planned was in fact your natural colour, there is a phrase used in my industry that states "colour will not lighten colour" you can't expect to use an OTC colour and your hair to turn out like the model on the front of the box, it just doesn't work that way. OTC haircolour is formulated for use on NATURAL dark blonde hair. what you needed to do was to use a colour remover to remove the dark colour and THEN applied the new lighter colour. as it is you now have 2 layers to remove- you need to use a colour remover now and don't touch bleach! use colorfix by robert craig if you live in USA or schwarzkopf igora phantom if you live in the UK) this will remove all un-natural colour and will leave your hair orange more than likely which means if you want a golden brown shade you should use a violet based dark colour. try 4V cyclamen by Goldwell Topchic, you can purchase it here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1-Tube-of-Goldwell...

the best thing is to go to a professional colour expert to correct this you could make it look a lot worst by doing it yourself
