I am a hairstylist, and unfortunately, color does not lift color. Once your hair is dyed, you may only use another dye to go darker. In order to lighten, you would need to A. highlight B. have correction done to remove as much depth to bring you to the level brown you want to be. (stripping your hair). Dye can only darken hair. So you would have to first bleach your hair a lighter colour than what you want, and then dye it brown.

(assuming a permanent dye).

I would recommend you let your hairdresser do this if you can.

Otherwise, don't forget to use a good conditioner to prevent overdrying of your hair.

If the colour is only semi-permanent, wash hair frequently for a week or so, and when the black has faded use the hair colour you like.

depends on how well yr hair catches color, and also if the dye u using has hydrogen peroxide. if yr hair colors easily %26amp; yr dye has some hyd perox, then it will catch. be warned though, yr hair will be damaged %26amp; this shows after sometime, the ends are very dry %26amp; hair is brittle. happend to me, colourd my hair, it came out all wrong %26amp; i covered it with another, and was ok, but later did i see the damage. give yr hair lots of treatment if u do decide to redye, hopefully this will minimise the damage, though not likely. it just may not be so obvious (grass hair)

No! brown hair dye will only add color. You should go to a pro. If you really can't afford it and decide to do it yourself you will have to find a lightener which will strip the color from your hair. Do a strand test first and see what color you get it may not be the color you want. If not the color you want then try another strand test with the same product and same hair strand. that will probably get you near what you want . Either brown or a blond. Then you can either leave it alone or go brown over the blond. Be warned !!! you may get red!!!. Your hair will go red and orange before blond because of the dark color that it is. Please be careful . It would be best to wait 2 days between bleachings. This will let your hair recover some. Remember this will all damage your hair so condition condition condition after you are thru. good luck.

In my experience you would have to lighten it first. I dyed my hair black for around 5 years and couldn't get another colour to take anywhere but on the roots! It will go a bit of a strange orangey colour when you lighten it but your brown colour should take much better this way! This is especially easy if you have shorter hair.
