My friend Molly (black american), in highschool, put bright (not neon) red in her hair and it looked great! I mean bright as in contrast, not exactly light v. dark. Because it was a little darker than candy apple red. I thought it was really pretty. I think a deep (not dark) purple looks beautiful in black hair as well. It doesn't seem to have that, "I got my hair painted at the carnival- look." I hope I am making sense. It's hard to describe the exact colors, but I think you can get the idea. :o) Good luck. Well I have black hair and I have dyed my hair several times to get a brown colour. Brown suits hair the most, and from there you can either dye it a lighter shade of brown and go gradually blond, or just get blond highlights. It's best to get a professional to do the highlights, as they are seriuosly hard to do. The dying part - just buy a DIY home kit {not expensive 10 dollars the most) and its striaght forward, just follow instructions. Good luck ok,
