my hair is naturally black, but i want to colour it a lighter colour. ive tried using loads of hair dyes but it doesnt work. my friend said i have to bleach my hair first. but what kind of bleach does anyone know which one i could use that will help me dye my hair?

You can try dye that says it will dye and lighten your hair like Schwarzkopf LIVE they are really good.

(look for the ones that say they will lighten as well as dye some are just dye)

i wanted to do the same thing with a difference that my black hair was dyed so its much harder to lighten

i bleached it twice than i put a light brown on it, it was a long procedure i started to get rid of the black hair about a year and a half ago now i have a lovely dark blond, also it damaged my hair

but because u have natural black hair it shouldn't be this difficult but i still suggest u go to a salon to avoid damage to your hair

any bleach is good. but only use it if your hair is healthy because it can break down your hair. to dye black hair you can go get it professionally done but sometimes that doesn't even work if you don't bleach it first. so best would be to bleach then dye it another color. try to avoid dyeing it alot right after each dye because that can kill your hair.

I've tried to bleach my own hair twice and have ended up with an uneven blonde tone with ginger patches!!..

after your hair has been bleached you can dye your hair any colour..just make sure you're using a good conditioner

Honey don't panic. You do have to lighten it first to color it because it is black. You can have it professionally done, that way you can be sure that nothing is gonna go wrong and the color you're looking for will be the color you get. Don't be one of those kitchen color people you see on here all the time asking why their hair is falling out after they just soaked it in peroxide for three hours. You'll be fine, just go to a salon. They know what their doing.

Your key words here are you have 'USED LOADS of HAIR DYES'....Your hair can only take so much color and It will just be ruined. Honestly your next step should be making an appointment with a professional and let her see and test your hair and see if maybe she can help you get the results you want ...providing your hair can take another chemical. Be honest with the stylist as she will be able to feel your hair for damage

dont do it! go to a hairdressers its worth the money if you start messing with bleach your hair will be in a very bad condition and with repeated beaching it could fall out ....it happend to me and i ended up with a super short mullet for 2 years waiting for it to grow out it was horendus!

Bleaching very dark hair is not something I would advise anyone to do themselves.

I'm a hairdresser and have seen many people with orange hair cos the bleach you buy in Boots is simply not powerful enough. My advice would be to get it done proffessionally and really don't try to do it yourself. Chances are you will need it bleaching and then toning or tinting depending on what colour you want it.

But please, please don't try this yourself cos it could go horribly wrong.
